The Waisted-Utility-Jacket Trend Taking Over Spring 2026

There is a a lot that gets me excited when it comes to spring, from the smell of blooms and green bells to the return of my monthly pedi, but it’s finally ditching my thick coat in favor of a hot spring jacket that never fails to lift my mood (and wardrobe). In the midst of my recent wardrobe makeover, I found myself looking for something new. To be clear, there was nothing wrong with my current jacket lineup (the barn and funnel necks of previous seasons had stood me in good stead), but I felt that one specific style was missing—a light jacket that felt grown-up but fresh and current. And then, (as if by the magic of the fashion gods) one new silhouette kept popping up again and again: the fitted waistcoat.

A reworked classic, this part sport, part utility jacket doesn’t feel that different from the windbreakers that are increasingly popular among the current style set. But where they fall apart is all in the details. With an adjustable drawstring waist (allowing you to reshape as needed) and weatherproof performance, they feel fresh now. Somehow balancing pared-back elegance and unapologetic toughness, the waisted utility jacket feels like a grown-up of windbreakers, carrying its throwback appeal with a high twist.

Fashionistas have been wearing this coat trend since the beginning of spring, and teamed it with everything from cropped capris and kitten heels, to straight leg trousers and ballet flats. Doing all the heavy lifting for you, it’s a piece that couldn’t be easier to style. Just throw it on, tuck it in and go.
